Lorem ipsum is placeholder text used to fill a layout before the real copy exists. The familiar opening, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit", is scrambled Latin, not random letters. Designers paste it into mock-ups so they can judge spacing, line length and flow without being distracted by the words themselves.
Where it comes from
The text is derived from a philosophical work by Cicero, De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. The common version is not a clean excerpt: words were altered, cut and shuffled centuries ago, which is why parts of it are not valid Latin. It has survived because it looks like real language — it has varied word lengths and a natural rhythm — without actually saying anything.
Why use it at all?
- It protects the design. Reviewers focus on layout, not on debating the wording.
- It is neutral. Because it carries no meaning, it does not accidentally favour one font or block over another.
- It is familiar. Everyone on a team recognises it instantly as "not final text", so nothing gets mistaken for real content.
How much text is "enough"?
| Layout element | Typical fill |
|---|---|
| Button or label | 1–3 words |
| Card or snippet | 1–2 sentences |
| Article body | 3–5 paragraphs |
| Full page mock-up | 5–8 paragraphs |
A useful trick is to fill a design with a realistic word count, not a token sentence. If your real article will run to 800 words, mock it up with roughly 800 words of filler, or the layout will look emptier in production than it did in the design.
When lorem ipsum hurts
Placeholder text becomes a liability if it survives into production, appears in a search index, or is read by a client who thinks the copy is finished. Anything that ships to real users must contain real words. It is also a poor fit for testing a message's meaning: lorem ipsum cannot tell you whether a headline persuades or a call to action is clear, because it means nothing.
Alternatives to consider
For early drafts, some teams prefer real, rough copy ("draft" text) so they can test tone and length at the same time. Others use topic-specific filler so the client sees content shaped like their industry. Lorem ipsum is the safe default for pure visual work; real copy is better once the conversation turns to messaging.
Generating it in the right amount
You rarely need to type it by hand. Choose paragraphs, sentences or words and copy as much as you need; our lorem ipsum generator produces clean filler in any quantity, so a five-paragraph mock-up takes seconds. If you want the filler to match a realistic article length, pair it with the reading time guide to translate words into minutes.
