The average adult reads silently at 200 to 250 words per minute, so 1,000 words takes roughly 4 to 5 minutes. Read the same text aloud and the pace drops to about 130 words per minute, stretching 1,000 words to nearly 8 minutes. Those two numbers, reading speed and speaking speed, answer different questions, and mixing them up is the most common mistake when estimating content length.
Reading 1,000 words at a glance
| Reader | Words per minute | Time for 1,000 words |
|---|---|---|
| Slow reader | 150 wpm | 6 min 40 s |
| Average adult | 200 wpm | 5 min |
| Fast reader | 250 wpm | 4 min |
| Speed reader | 400 wpm | 2 min 30 s |
Reading vs speaking
Speaking is slower than reading because the mouth can only produce words so fast, while the eye scans whole phrases. Narration for audiobooks settles around 150 to 160 wpm, close to but slightly faster than conversational speech.
| Mode | Speed | 1,000 words | 2,000 words |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silent reading | 200–250 wpm | 4–5 min | 8–10 min |
| Reading aloud | ~150 wpm | ~6.5 min | ~13 min |
| Conversational speech | ~130 wpm | ~7.5–8 min | ~15 min |
| Audiobook narration | 150–160 wpm | ~6.5 min | ~13 min |
Word counts for common formats
| Content | Words | Read time | Speak time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short snippet | 300 | 1.5 min | 2.3 min |
| Short article | 1,000 | 5 min | 8 min |
| Long-form guide | 2,000 | 10 min | 15 min |
| Conference talk script | 2,600 | 13 min | 20 min |
How to calculate reading time
- Count the words in your text.
- Divide the word count by your chosen speed, for example 1,500 ÷ 250 = 6 minutes.
- Round up to the nearest minute for the estimate you display.
Publishing platforms often use a fixed divisor: Medium shows "X min read" using 265 wpm, so its formula is minutes = words ÷ 265. That is why a 1,000-word post is labelled "4 min read" there rather than 5.
Where the numbers come from
Large-scale research on adult reading (Brysbaert, 2019) puts silent reading of English non-fiction at about 238 wpm. Speaking rates cluster near 130 wpm in conversation and 150 to 160 wpm in prepared narration. Use the low end for technical or unfamiliar material, and the high end for light content.
To get an estimate for your exact text and adjust both speeds, paste it into the reading time calculator. If you are trimming that text to fit a platform, see our guide on character limits for social media, meta descriptions and SMS.
