To find what percentage one number is of another, divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100. The formula is: percentage = (part ÷ whole) × 100.
Quick example
You scored 45 out of 60. Divide 45 by 60 to get 0.75, then multiply by 100. The result is 75%, so your score is 75%.
Step by step
- Identify the part (the number you have) and the whole (the total).
- Divide the part by the whole.
- Multiply the result by 100.
- Add the percent sign.
Common uses
- Test scores and grades (40 out of 50).
- Progress and completion rates.
- Conversion rates in marketing and analytics.
The most common mistake
Always divide by the whole, not the part. If you swap them, 60 ÷ 45 gives 133%, which answers a different question: "60 is what percent of 45?". Decide which number is the reference before you calculate.
