To find the discount percentage, divide the amount saved by the original price and multiply by 100: (discount ÷ original price) × 100.
Example: finding the percent off
A $120 jacket is reduced to $84. The saving is $120 − $84 = $36. The discount is (36 ÷ 120) × 100 = 30%.
Example: applying a discount
A $60 item has 25% off. The saving is 25% of 60 = (25 ÷ 100) × 60 = $15, so you pay $45.
Step by step
- Subtract the sale price from the original price to get the saving.
- Divide the saving by the original price.
- Multiply by 100 to get the discount percentage.
Watch out for stacked discounts
"Extra 20% off an already 30% off item" is not 50% off. Apply them one at a time: a $100 item becomes $70, then $56 — a total discount of 44%, not 50%.
