How to Use the Random Picker
The Random Picker turns any list into a fair, transparent draw that runs entirely in your browser. Whether you are raffling prizes, assigning tasks or choosing a volunteer, the whole process stays on your device and the result is decided by a cryptographically secure random source.
Paste your list into the text box, one item per line. Names, email addresses, prizes, ticket numbers, tasks or questions all work. Blank lines are ignored automatically, so you can paste a column copied from a spreadsheet without cleaning it first.
Choose how many items to pick by entering a number in the "How many to pick" field. If you only need a single winner, leave it at 1. You can draw up to 1000 items at once.
Decide how repeats should behave. Keep "Unique picks" checked when you want every winner in a single draw to be different. Enable "Remove winner after each draw" when you are running a sequential contest: after each draw the winners are taken out of the pool, so nobody can win twice.
Press Pick Random Items. The tool reads every line, draws the winners with crypto.getRandomValues and rejection sampling, and shows them as numbered picks together with a live count of how many items remain.
Copy the winners or reset the pool. Use "Copy winners" to send the result to your clipboard, and "Reset List" to restore every item before the next round.
What Is a Random Picker?
A random picker is a tool that selects one or more items from a list without favouring any of them. You supply the candidates, tell it how many winners you need, and it returns a random sample. Common uses include prize draws, classroom activities, team building, task assignment and any situation where a human choice might be biased or simply impossible to make. Two sampling styles are supported. "Unique picks" draws without replacement, which means the same item cannot appear twice within a single draw — the equivalent of pulling names out of a hat and setting each one aside. When unique picks are disabled the tool samples with replacement, so an item may appear more than once, which mirrors rolling a die again for every pick. The "Remove winner after each draw" option extends the without-replacement idea across many rounds: every winner is removed from the pool, so a long series of draws produces a fair permutation of your list with no repeats at all. The quality of the randomness matters just as much as the logic. This picker uses crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, combined with rejection sampling. Rejection sampling removes the modulo bias that appears when a random number is scaled to a range that does not divide evenly, so every item has exactly the same probability of being chosen. Because all of this runs locally, your list never leaves your computer and nothing is stored on a server.
Common Applications
1. Prize draws and giveaways: paste the list of participants, pick a winner, and copy the result for your announcement. The remove-winner mode lets you select first, second and third place in sequence without ever repeating a name.
2. Classroom and workshops: choose which student answers next, assign presentation slots, or form random groups from a class roster without showing favouritism.
3. Task rotation and chores: enter everyone on a team and draw who takes the unpopular shift or the next on-call week, with the queue rotating automatically as winners are removed.
4. Decision making: when two or more options feel equally good, paste them and let a fair draw break the tie rather than agonising over the choice.
5. Testing and sampling: developers, teachers and researchers can pull a random subset of IDs, questions or test cases from a long list to build a sample for review.
Unique Picks vs. With Replacement
The two modes answer different questions. Sampling without replacement — unique picks — guarantees a set of distinct winners and is what you want for a raffle, a team draw or any list where repetition would be unfair. Its one constraint is that you cannot draw more unique items than you have candidates.
Sampling with replacement lets the same item be selected again, which is useful when you want to simulate independent random events: rolling dice, spinning a wheel, or answering the question "if I pick at random three times, what might come up?". To switch between the two, simply leave unique mode on for sets and turn it off for independent draws.
Why Cryptographically Secure Randomness Matters
Many quick scripts use Math.random(), a fast pseudorandom generator that is fine for animations but can be predictable and introduces a small bias when scaled to arbitrary ranges. That bias is usually invisible but it is exactly the kind of flaw a determined observer can exploit in a public giveaway.
This tool builds every pick from crypto.getRandomValues and rejection sampling, so each candidate has an identical probability regardless of the list length. The draw is also completely private: there is no server, no account and no logging, so nobody — including us — can see, influence or replay your result.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ
Is the draw really random and fair?
Yes. Every pick is generated with crypto.getRandomValues and rejection sampling, so each item on your list has exactly the same probability. There is no weighting and no hidden bias toward any position in the list.
What is the difference between unique picks and remove winner?
Unique picks stops the same item appearing twice in a single draw. Remove winner after each draw goes further: it takes the winners out of the pool entirely, so you can run several rounds in sequence and no one can ever be picked twice.
How many items can I draw at once?
You can pick between 1 and 1000 items per draw, and the list itself can hold up to tens of thousands of lines. In unique mode the number you draw cannot exceed the number of remaining items.
Can I pick more times than there are items?
Only if unique picks are disabled. With unique picks on, the tool kindly refuses and asks you to lower the count, because it is impossible to choose distinct winners from a smaller pool.
Is my list saved or sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser using native JavaScript. Your list, settings and results never leave your device and are never uploaded or stored on a server.
